The science

Why the schedule is timed the way it is

This timeline follows the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) recommendations, which extend the government's Universal Immunization Programme. The spacing isn't arbitrary: maternal antibodies fade over the first months (which is why measles vaccine waits until 9 months), while diseases like pertussis are most dangerous earliest (which is why DTP starts at 6 weeks with tight 4-week intervals).

Boosters exist because several vaccines need immune-memory reinforcement after the primary series. A missed date is almost never a restart — catch-up schedules exist for every vaccine — but delays do leave windows of vulnerability, which is why clinics running automated vaccination recall reminders see meaningfully better completion rates.

Schedule per IAP recommendations; your pediatrician may adjust for prematurity, medical conditions or catch-up needs. Always follow your doctor's advice.

Don't panic and don't restart — every vaccine has a catch-up schedule. Contact your pediatrician promptly; they'll slot the missed doses correctly relative to the rest of the timeline.
