The science

Why Indian doctors use a lower cutoff

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The WHO's global bands call 25+ overweight — but research across South Asian populations shows metabolic risk (type 2 diabetes, heart disease) rises at lower BMI, because of higher body-fat percentage at the same BMI. India's health ministry and most Indian physicians therefore use 23 as the overweight threshold and 27.5 as obese.

BMI also can't see muscle vs fat — athletes read "overweight" while being lean. Treat it as a screening signal: if you're above 23 on the Asian-Indian scale, a waist measurement and a lipid/HbA1c panel with your doctor is a sensible next step.

These results are indicative wellness estimates based on standard published formulas — not a diagnosis or medical advice. Always consult your doctor for clinical decisions.

Frequently asked questions

For Indian and South Asian adults, 18.5–22.9 is considered normal. Risk of diabetes and heart disease rises from BMI 23 (overweight) and 27.5 (obese) — lower than the WHO's global cutoffs of 25 and 30.

No — it's a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It can't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may read high and elderly people with low muscle may read falsely normal. Waist circumference and body-fat measurement add crucial context.

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser — your height and weight are never transmitted, logged or stored anywhere. This tool is DPDP-compliant by architecture.
