When a patient searches "clinic near me", Google shows a map with three results. Those three clinics get the patient. This guide covers the seven factors that decide who makes that cut — in the order you should fix them.
1. Get your primary category exactly right
Google matches searches to categories, not descriptions. A pediatric clinic categorized as generic "Medical clinic" loses "child specialist near me" searches to a clinic categorized "Pediatrician". Set the most specific primary category available, then add secondary categories for every real service line.
2. Kill every NAP inconsistency
Your Name, Address and Phone must be identical on Google, JustDial, Practo, Facebook and your website. If Google sees "Mehra Dental Clinic" in one place and "Dr. Mehra's Dental & Family Clinic" in another, its confidence in your listing drops — and confidence is rank. A profile cleanup starts here.
3. Grow review velocity, not just review count
Two hundred reviews from 2022 lose to eighty reviews with ten fresh ones this month. Google weights recency and consistency heavily. The reliable mechanism: ask every happy patient at the moment of thanks — a QR standee at the reception desk plus a post-visit nudge. (This is exactly what our review management service automates.)
4. Respond to every review — fast
Response activity is both a ranking signal and a conversion factor: prospective patients read your replies to judge how you treat people. Reply to praise briefly and warmly; reply to criticism calmly and concretely. Never argue diagnosis in public.
5. Complete every field, then keep it moving
Photos (interior, exterior, team), services with descriptions, accurate OPD hours, holiday hours, Q&A answers, weekly posts. Google measurably prefers active profiles — a listing that posts weekly health tips outranks an identical dormant one.
6. Add medical schema to your website
Structured data (Physician, MedicalClinic, service markup) tells Google — and AI search engines like Gemini and ChatGPT — exactly what you treat and where. Clinics with proper schema markup are also far more likely to be quoted directly in AI answers, which is where a growing share of patient discovery is moving in 2026.
7. Enable booking from the listing
Google rewards listings that complete the patient journey. A Book Appointment button raises engagement (a ranking input) and converts searchers who would never call. It also captures the 40%+ of searches that happen outside OPD hours.
The order matters
Fix categories and NAP first (foundation), then reviews and responses (velocity), then content and schema (depth), then booking (conversion). Most clinics see local-pack movement within 4–8 weeks of executing this stack consistently — the hard part is the "consistently".
